Auto Inspection Tips for Novices

If you are looking to purchase used cars and you are not mechanically savy, conventional wisdom says that you should take a mechanic with you. This is a pricey option if you cannot eliminate certain cars yourself. Since pre-owned cars are real budget savers, you can probably afford the mechanic once or twice once you have narrowed down your choices. Here are a few tips to help you spot a damaged car that require nothing but your vision so shop in good weather.
Used cars that were in bad accidents may have a bent frame. You can tell if the frame is bent by standing behind the car and seeing if the front and back tires are in a straight line. Look at the frame itself. Everything should be perfectly straight. Steer clear of any crooked cars immediately.
Look at the cracks of the car, like in the bottoms of the doors and in the trunk. If mud is present, the car may have been in a flood. You can usually tell what is normal dirt and what is flood damage. Mud in crevices and new carpeting is a sign that the car may have been underwater at one point. Smell for mold. It is almost impossible to remove the smell unless it is masked with a strong air freshener.
Don’t waste your time or money having a mechanic inspect a car for you that has been in an accident or in a flood. There are many pre-owned cars on the market, yours is out there.
